Where to Sell Jewelry Online
Selling jewelry online might be the simplest way to sell jewelry from home. There are many options to sell jewelry online, and when I was paying off my $150,000 in debt, I tried them all! I now have experience selling jewelry online and know which ones are the best options to get you money fast.
Before you get started, follow these tips that have worked well for me in the past:
1. Clean your jewelry first (If it's brand name like Tiffany or David Yurman, they will clean it at the store for you for free!). You can also use a jewelry cleaning machine like this one, or use at home tricks like baking soda or toothpaste. Just make sure to double check that your jewelry's material won't be damaged by using abrasive items like baking soda/toothpaste. I personally just used toothpaste to clean my silver jewelry, and it worked really well for me.
2. Make sure your photos are high quality. Your pictures should not be blurry, and your jewelry should be the only item visible in the photo, preferably on a clean, white surface. A smartphone camera is fine! I used my bathroom counter or my desk as a surface. Take photos from many angles (front, back, side) and with very good light. You can never have too many photos. When in doubt, take extra pictures. The better the buyer can see the product, the more likely they are to purchase it!
3. Be honest and detailed in your descriptions. Make sure to include material, stone, brand, and measurements as they apply. Be as detailed and specific in your description as you can. The more details you give, the more likely someone is to buy your jewelry. Most importantly, include a description of any damage or defects AND include a photo. You might be tempted to conceal or minimize any defects, but if someone purchases your jewelry, they can and WILL send the item straight back to you. If the damage was not included in a photo or description, they'll get their money back, and you'll get a bad review! Good reviews are key to buyers trusting you which equates to more sales.
Option #1. How to Sell Jewelry on Facebook
Selling jewelry on Facebook would be my #1 choice, specifically Facebook Marketplace. Simply login to your Facebook page, click marketplace from the top middle menu (it's the store icon all the way to the right) and create your first post! You'll just need images of the jewelry you want to sell and a description. Uploading your photos is simple as you can upload them from your desktop. If you took photos on your phone, AirDrop them to your desktop OR send them to yourself in an email and then download them to your computer from your email. If you're selling multiple items, create a desktop folder for each piece of jewelry you want to sell and place the photos in the corresponding folder. That will keep you organized. Simply create a post, upload the photos, add the description and your price, and voila! Download the Facebook messenger app to respond to any inquiries in a timely manner. The faster you respond, the better. I recommend enabling notifications or checking the messenger app at least once daily as people lose interest fast!
Facebook Marketplace allows you to offer local pick up, local drop off, or shipping. It is entirely up to you which options you want to provide. I mostly did local pick up because I wanted to do less work! Once you have an interested buyer and an agreed upon price- it's time to make money! You'll need to select a location to meet up. Don't forget to agree upon a payment option before you meet up (i.e. cash/Venmo). While interacting with buyers, always be polite as they will write you a review afterwards that is visible to future buyers!
SAFETY TIPS: Always pick a public location. I always picked a bank as they have 24/7 security surveillance. Always bring a friend with you. Never EVER give your personal information like your social security number, phone number, or personal address. There are a lot of scammers on Facebook Marketplace, but they are easy to spot. They will act interested in your product (usually messaging within minutes of you posting the item) but then have strange reasons they cannot pay you in cash. They'll say things like their relative has to come pick up the item, and they need your cell phone number. It's a scam, simply report them and block them.
I used Venmo and cash as payment options. I would have them Venmo me right then at the meet up and make sure it went through. Overall, 99% of my experiences on Facebook Marketplace have been easy and positive. I made over $2000 selling jewelry on Facebook the year I was paying off my debt. If you're wanting to sell jewelry near me- Facebook is the way to go as it can be entirely local.
Final tip: Don't forget that your Facebook friends are able to view what you're selling! If you don't want others knowing what you're selling, simply go to the privacy settings of your listing and click "hide from friends". Lest Aunt Eileen get upset when she sees you're selling the hideous, kitchy beautiful necklace she gave you for your birthday last year...
Option #2. Sell Jewelry on Poshmark
My second favorite way to sell jewelry online is through Poshmark. Other sites, like Mercari, are also a good option although I have never used them. I have been using Poshmark for over a decade, and I've loved my experience. It is extremely simple to use (even for someone who is not tech savvy like myself), and they have good customer service. It takes me less than 2 minutes to create a Poshmark listing, and if priced correctly, your jewelry should sell fast! I could usually sell my items within 30 days.
Poshmark loves brands and more expensive items, so if you've been wondering where to sell an engagement ring, Poshmark is it. It's one of the best places to sell an engagement ring. Continue reading below for how to sell an engagement ring.
Poshmark allows you to offer special sales and discounts on things like shipping to help market and sell your items. To list an item, simply create an account, create a post, post your photos with a description and price, and you're done! You will get an email when an item has sold, so no back-and-forth messaging is needed like with Facebook. Poshmark will them promptly email you a shipping label which you then print and can tape to a free USPS mailing envelope. Make sure your jewelry is packed in a neat, appealing way and is packaged to be protected from damage. Poshmark makes it very easy for customers to return damaged items OR items that were not described correctly (example: You didn't include a description of wear/tear/damage to the item). To avoid this, pack your items carefully and make sure you describe your jewelry honestly and in detail! I've sold tons of items with regular wear and tear without an issue, no need to hide this from customers.
Poshmark allows you to sell jewelry entirely online, without ever having to leave home. You will likely make about 10-15% less profit than if you sold an item directly to someone via Facebook, because Poshmark takes a small percentage of the sale. However, for many people this is worth the convenience of not having to spend time messaging/negotiating/planning with buyers like you do on Facebook Marketplace. Option #3. How to Sell Jewelry at a Yard Sale
If online selling isn't your forte, fear not! A yard sale or a garage sale is an amazing and easy option to sell jewelry (and any other junk treasured items you're looking to find a new home for). Not only can you easily sell jewelry at a garage sale, but you can sell old furniture, appliances, pretty much anything! And the best part is it is only one day of work and you're done.
The key to a good yard sale is to advertise in advance. You can do so on Facebook Marketplace, by creating a post with pictures of some of the items you will be selling, and then you can include the date, location, and time of your garage sale. Just be mindful that this advertisement will reach many people (not just your Facebook friends) and you run the risk of some weirdos showing up at your house. Another way to advertise is to create a flyer and post it around your neighborhood. Don't forget to post it at your local community center/church/synagogue/YMCA. If you have children, post a flyer at their school. Invite your coworkers! Although this will have less reach than posting online via Facebook Marketplace, you will only have neighbors showing up at your garage sale. You could also create a traditional Facebook post that would only be visible to Facebook friends, depending on your profile settings.
Traditionally, garage sales and yard sales were held- well, in your yard or out of your garade! But if you'd prefer, you can always use a local parking lot with permission. The downside is that you have to lug your stuff there. Make sure to create some signs to post in your yard and at the end of your street pointing in the direction of the yard sale. This will ensure passerbys can find you.
Make sure all your items are clean and presented nicely, and be ready to negotiate as buyers will expect that prices are not firm.
You will make less money off jewelry sold at a yard sale compared to Facebook Marketplace or Poshmark. However, selling jewelry at a yard sale is a great option for non-brand name jewelry. Selling jewelry at a yard sale is a great option to sell jewelry from home.
